GRADUATE EXAMS &
TEST PREPARATION

When looking at the admissions requirements to a graduate program you need to identify whether an exam is required.  For example, the standard graduate exam, formally known as the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required for some master's degree programs and most, if not all, PhD degree programs. Check to see if there are specific subject discipline exams or a test appropriate to your professional area, such as the LSAT, MCAT, or GMAT.

Test scores are only one of several factors that admission committees consider in reviewing your application. It is highly recommended that you prepare for the required exam(s) and to practice test-taking skills and develop familiarity with the kinds of questions that might be asked.  There are several ways to prepare: form a study group or enroll in a test preparation course.  You should plan to use your summer for test preparation.

Get used to working under pressure!! If you are familiar with the format of the test and the instructions for each section, you will be able to move along quickly to the actual question sets. The summer and early fall are good times to take the test, receive scores, and meet application deadlines. Don't wait until the last minute!!
