Who is responsible for your scholastics?

The Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP) contains three components, one of which is the Graduate Information Program (GIP). The program's goal is to encourage EOP students and students from underrepresented communities to begin preparing for educational opportunities beyond the bachelor of arts/science degree.

Our services include:

  • Advising regarding advanced educational opportunities;
  • Connection to campus resources;
  • Variety of workshops and events throughout the academic year;
  • Library with graduate and professional school resources

The California Forums for Diversity in Graduate Education, planned by a consortium of public and private colleges and universities from throughout California, have been designed particularly to meet the needs of advanced undergraduates and master's candidates who belong to groups that are currently underrepresented in doctoral-level programs. The groups include low-income and first-generation college students and especially African Americans, American Indians, Chicanos/Latinos, Filipinos, Pacific Islanders, Asian American women, and Asian American men in the arts, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences.

Each California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education will bring together approximately 1,000 pre-selected, high-achieving undergraduate and master's students. The students will explore graduate opportunities and resources by participating in numerous workshops conducted throughout the day. Universities and individual graduate programs offering academic master's and/or Ph.D. degrees are welcome to participate in the recruitment fairs that will take place concurrently with the other planned activities. Note that these events are for all disciplines except MBA programs, medicine, dentistry, optometry, chiropractic, pharmacy, veterinary science, and law, all of which have their own recruiting networks.

OBJECTIVE
To provide an intensive research training experience that leads to an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in the pursuit of basic answers to current questions in the biological sciences. Fellows will pursue individual research projects under the direction of a member of the graduate school faculty. Lectures and seminars by faculty members will supplement the research.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be enrolled in a natural science degree program at the undergraduate level and have completed the sophomore year. Criteria used in selecting fellowship recipients will include college grades, relevant experience, and letters of recommendation from faculty who can assess the applicant's potential for advanced training and success in biological research.

SALARY AND TENURE
Each fellowship award carries with it $4000 in support for the 10-week period beginning June 7, 2010 through August 13, 2010. This support taxable and is the mechanism used by the university to pay SURF students for their training. If a fellow requires housing, the costs will be covered by the program; however, fellows are responsible for paying for their own travel expenses and will not be reimbursed by the SURF program. Complete details about the SURF program can be found at www.utsouthwestern.edu/SURF
