In your Junior year, begin consulting with a faculty adviser during the winter or spring quarter to decide on a topic for your senior exit requirement.  It is preferable you do this in your junior year so you may begin research for the senior exit requirement at least during the summer between junior and senior years.  (It would be beneficial to begin you senior research as early as possible in your junior year, but no later that that summer.

Ask you faculty adviser for resources or contacts for summer research in the topic you have chosen, especially if you are going to another city, state, country, etc.

Also consult with other professors who work on the same topic for more resource information.

If you are considering to attend the Education Abroad Program or UCDC, you should again consult with your major adviser as soon as possible to determine how many courses that you will take abroad can be applied to your major. Also, speak with your college Preceptor to find out how the program will affect your last quarter of attendance.

Focus Questions

I am a third year student with 103 units.  Am I still considered a junior?
Your class status does not depend on how many years you have been in UCSC. Instead, it depends on how many units you have completed. To be considered junior status, you will need 90-134 units completed. Refer to the Navigator.

When do I need to have my writing intensive (W) GE satisfied by?
The writing intensive GE can be satisfied at any point before your graduation. The only restriction is that it can only be taken in UCSC for it to count. It is advised that this GE should be taken before your senior year because it will prep you for your senior thesis/courses.

When do I have to have my major declared by?
You need to have your major declared before the time you become junior status; in other words, before you complete 90 units. If you still have not declared you major by then, your enrollment may be blocked. You will need to see your college adviser/preceptor. It is advised that you should have your major declared by no later than the second quarter of your sophomore year.

What is AIS?
The AIS is the Academic Information System. It is a portal for UCSC students to attain various information. This portal can be accessed through here. You will need to enter your student ID number and password.

What are good resources to find off campus housing?
The best easily accessible resource to find off campus housing will be the Community Rental Office.

Where can I find internships?
Internships can be found in many places such as the Career Center, Department Offices, Graduate Information Programs (GIP) Library, or even through online resources such as Hotjobs, Craigslist, or Monster.com.

Which quarter of the year should I start looking for these internships?
The sooner the better. Deadlines for internships are spread throughout the year. If you are planning to apply for a summer internship, then winter quarter would be a good time to start, but do not restrict yourself from looking before or after that time.  Contact the Graduate Information Program for more information.

I recently transferred to UCSC from a community college. Where can I look for services dedicated to help transfer juniors?
There are many available resources all over campus to help transfer juniors. The one that is dedicated to help transfer students is the Services for Transfer and Re-Entry Students (STARS). They are located at the Academic Resource Center (ARC).

What is the maximum amount of units I can transfer from a community college?
120 units.

Are on-campus housing available for transfer students?
Yes. Please contact your college's housing office for detailed information.
